June hare and hound just a week after may!. Excellent weather brought loads of canal boats out and made the gueese out to play.
The goose at bridge 24 was particularly active protecting it's young and had been agrevated by several kayakers when Sarah got to it. Sarah went for a swim but the goose continued to attack with the agression af a parent about to loose a baby. Simon being a man familiar wth livr stock carried straight on leaving sarah to defend herself somthing she was doing with a graight deal of success. Once sarah was back in her boat we a padeled with her until John passed us at which point she lift me standing. Considering the time spent in the water her 6th was exceptional.
Simon also had a good padel its about time I stiched him up too but he is a junior so some morals must apply.

John S needs a mention, getting to grips with the new boat.

The goose at bridge 24 needs a name-please make any sugestion and an identy picture would be usefull if somebody could post one. There will be a prise for best name and picture!

May Hare and Hound

A very low turn out this month but not supprising for a bank holiday with next month race next weekend.

Sarah had an excellent race riding on my wake then out paddelling me in the last 50m setting a new PB in her very nice borrowed boat. John Smith back from his DW exploits held Andrew of to finish first.

Being a bank Holiday there was a lot more cannal trafic causing most paddelers to waite at bridges. Sorry to mike both myself and Sarah cut him up at one bridge on the way back.

Owe and I had a good time too.

Macclesfield Mayor takes up the challenge

Macclesfield Mayor accepted the club's offer to have a go at canoeing. As part of the Mayors' Youth Zone Initiative, Cllr Norman Edwards came along to Bollington, to meet club members, and see how we encourage juniors into our sport.
He then joined Chris Cleaver in an open boat and later said he really enjoyed himself but hadn't expected it to be such hard work. How far did you make him paddle, Chris?

Report by Adrian

Another cold wet race but good compertition all the same. This weekend being the start of the hols there were more barges about so more portage practice at bridges. This had quite an efect on the otheral result with the faster boats all portaging towards the end when they were traveling as a pack.
PB set by john Smith well done and good look on the DW this weekend!

Many thanks to rosmary who was the time keeper this week.

Good look to all mac paddelers in the DW John& Ned, John Smith and Sarah Green. When you have finished let me know why. Especialy John on your 5th start this year (remember when you brake 24 hours the next goal is 23 etc).

March Hare and Hound

March Hare and Hound

Another good tern out and some very close racing. 7 of the fifteen boats finished in a one minute slot.
Our outstanding paddle came from John K with a 37:20. Very well done. PB’s also set by Simon and John Smith. Well done to both of you, both of them have had month on month improvement. Simon has also disclosed his race objective for the day which was to beat me, well done again.
I have adjusted some handy caps as usual, sorry john; but at least you retain your own start.Ha

Border Esk - An alternative to the Eden?

Over half term, Nick and myself paddled the river Esk just over the Scottish border, from Langholm to Canonbie. The trip is very similiar to the normal Eden trip.

Interestingly, the staff at the centre we were staying at in the lake district have decided to stop paddling the Eden because of the length of the getout walk, especially when carrying open boats (and no issue with River access in Scotland; no need to book; etc).

In contrast, even though Langholm is an extra half hours drive, the get in is direct from the (free) public car park (with toilets) (see picture).

The getout is a simple 50 yard carry from the river up to the road - with teashop directly opposite! [We actually managed to drive the centre's Landrover right down to the river.]

Jan Hare and Hound

(Click in table to expand)

Well done to all 17 paddlers who braved the cold and wind. Four PB’s set to dayt well done to John Smith just returning to kayaking. Simon and Sarah had a good race both starting together, setting PB’s and finishing together. Maggie set a PB and had an excellent race.

I have taken the chance to adjust a lot of handicaps the first 5 home will start later next time and the last five home are moved forward a minute-hopefully this will give a better finish next time. Thank you again to Caroline for timing.

Sorry about the quality of the table but a feel quite smog in that I have paseded the results.
