March Hare and Hound

March Hare and Hound

Another good tern out and some very close racing. 7 of the fifteen boats finished in a one minute slot.
Our outstanding paddle came from John K with a 37:20. Very well done. PB’s also set by Simon and John Smith. Well done to both of you, both of them have had month on month improvement. Simon has also disclosed his race objective for the day which was to beat me, well done again.
I have adjusted some handy caps as usual, sorry john; but at least you retain your own start.Ha

Border Esk - An alternative to the Eden?

Over half term, Nick and myself paddled the river Esk just over the Scottish border, from Langholm to Canonbie. The trip is very similiar to the normal Eden trip.

Interestingly, the staff at the centre we were staying at in the lake district have decided to stop paddling the Eden because of the length of the getout walk, especially when carrying open boats (and no issue with River access in Scotland; no need to book; etc).

In contrast, even though Langholm is an extra half hours drive, the get in is direct from the (free) public car park (with toilets) (see picture).

The getout is a simple 50 yard carry from the river up to the road - with teashop directly opposite! [We actually managed to drive the centre's Landrover right down to the river.]

Jan Hare and Hound

(Click in table to expand)

Well done to all 17 paddlers who braved the cold and wind. Four PB’s set to dayt well done to John Smith just returning to kayaking. Simon and Sarah had a good race both starting together, setting PB’s and finishing together. Maggie set a PB and had an excellent race.

I have taken the chance to adjust a lot of handicaps the first 5 home will start later next time and the last five home are moved forward a minute-hopefully this will give a better finish next time. Thank you again to Caroline for timing.

Sorry about the quality of the table but a feel quite smog in that I have paseded the results.

Sprint training

This situation is enough to make anyone sprint to the beach. Apparently it was off a beach in Cape Town.

News from Gordon

Hi All

Just a short note to say I have had my second shoulder op last week, and the doc says it was successful, just the recovery process now, so hope to be paddling early January if all goes well, and then be back in action for the 2006 season.

Attached is a pic of a secret surf wave (maybe not) I found on the Goyt near the Roman Lakes. A few days before I took this pic, the river was much higher and the wave was about 3+ feet high all the way across the river, it looked like it could be fun to surf. There is also another similar wave
30 m down stream. Check it out when we next have a good down pour.Hopefully I will be on it before the winter ends.

Dylan is settled at Nottingham Uni and has joined the Notts canoe club and is back into training for marathons and playboating.
